Advent devotional for 5 December 2020 – John 1v4 – in Him was life

John 1:4

The beginning of John’s gospel is showing us who Jesus is so that we can be absolutely confident in Him and believe in His name and be saved – “…that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name” (John 20:31).

John 1:4 shows another thing about the Word, Jesus, that proves He is God. “In Him was life.” Jesus did not get life from outside (He was not created) but in Him was life. He has life in Himself (John 5:26). So, He is able to give life and He gave life to all of creation – and to you.

He is not just the source of all physical life, but He is the giver of eternal life. Everyone is dead in trespasses and sin (Ephesians 2:1) until we receive the life of God’s Son (Galatians 2:20). He came that we might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10).

He is totally, 100% perfect as God and Saviour.

John 1:4 continues: “…and the life was the light of men.” As the source of all life, so He is the giver of light. He created light but He is also the source of spiritual light, of revelation. The name “Word” shows that He is the true and full revelation of God. And so, the only way to know God is through Jesus Christ. And the only way to have life is through Jesus Christ.

We don’t need to look anywhere else for life or anywhere else for light. It is all found in Him. Let’s praise the name of Jesus.
