Advent devotional for 4 December 2020 – John 1v3 – All things were made through Him

John 1:3

“All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.”

All things were made through Him (the Word, Jesus). Like the previous verse, today’s verse seems to repeat itself: All things were made through Him; nothing was made unless it was made by Him. Again, John is making sure that we get the truth – there truly is no thing in the universe that was not made through Jesus.

This confirms that Jesus truly is God. If nothing was made unless it was made through Him, then He Himself is uncreated, He is eternal, He is God.

This also shows us that Jesus has all power. He created the universe – everything. He created the earth, the sun and moon, the mountains, the hill, the oceans and the forests, the trees, the grass and the flowers, the stars and galaxies that stretch across the universe. So, nothing is too hard for Him. We don’t need to worry that our problems are too great, our finances, our sickness, our past, our future, even our sins. Nothing is too great for Him who created all things.

We owe Him everything. “All things” includes you and me. Even before we think about our salvation, our creation as a human being, the knitting of our bodies and souls in our mother’s womb, the blood that flows in our bodies, the brain whose signals ensure that our hearts beat, the air that we breathe – all of these come from Him.

This also shows us how amazing it is that Jesus came to this earth. He came to the place He made and to the people that He created. He was born in a room and He had made the very stones that the room was built from. He used His hands as a carpenter on wood that He had made. He even went to the cross – a cross cut from a tree that He had made, nailed by nails made from metal that He had created, and His body laid in a cave that He had made.

This is truly amazing. As we see Him more clearly, may He build our faith in Him, our love for Him, our assurance of His care and power in our lives, and our obedience to Him. To God be the glory, great things He has done.
