Daily Devotional for 17 October 2020 – Hebrews 9v28 – He will appear a second time

Hebrews 9:28

Jesus is coming again and that is very good news!

Some Christians worry about the second coming. People have asked me if they will get told off by God on that final day for all the times that they have failed as Christians.

Today’s text tells us that the second coming is not about our sin but about the fulfilment of our salvation. It says He “…will appear a second time not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him.”

The phrase translated “not to deal with sin” means “separate from sin.” In other words, our sin has been removed; it has been dealt with; it has been taken away. He is not coming back to punish your sin! Glory to God!

Instead he is coming back “…to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.” Aren’t we already saved? Yes, but we are still living on this earth and we face temptation, suffering and sin. But when Jesus comes, our salvation will be complete. We will receive the fullness of what Jesus died for – the full inheritance of glory.

And this is why the end of the verse says, “…those who are eagerly waiting for Him.”

This is such good news. Are you longing for Him to come? Let’s be like the people of God in Revelation who say, “Amen! Come Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).
