Faith takes God at His word and interprets what we see with our eyes according to what God says.
Today’s verse says: “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible” (Hebrews 11:3).
Our eyes see the glorious creation. The world says that it came about through a big bang and that life evolved over billions of years. Faith takes God at His word. We see the creation, and we believe what God says about it. He created it by the power of His word and He made it out of nothing.
Faith believes what God says even though we weren’t there when the universe was made. God’s word is enough. If God says it, faith believes it.
The Christian lives by faith. The world says there is no God, but faith takes God at His word (“In the beginning God”, Genesis 1:1) and believes that God exists (Hebrews 11:6).
The world says sin doesn’t matter; faith takes God at His word and says that He is “Holy, holy, holy” (Isaiah 6:3), but that we can be saved through faith in Christ alone (Romans 3:22-23).
Trouble can cause us to think that God doesn’t love us – the devil lies to us – but faith stands on God’s word: “I have loved you with an everlasting love” (Jeremiah 31:3).
When we are struggling, we are tempted to think God has left us, but faith takes God at His word, even when we don’t see with our physical eyes: “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5).
In every situation, there is a choice: will we just look with our physical eyes and hear with our physical ears, or will we stand by faith on the unchanging word of God?
Even when we can’t see, God’s word is the truth and we can trust Him.
