Daily Devotional for 5 August 2020 – Colossians 3v3

Colossians 3:3

Following on from yesterday, today’s scripture tells us why Christian believers are called to “set our minds on things that are above” (Colossians 3:2).

Today’s verse says “For…” (that is the reason) “…you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3).

“You have died.”  This is the other side of being new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17).  While we are the same people physically, spiritually the Christian’s old life is dead and buried.  You are no longer lost and separated from God.  Your old way of living and thinking has been crucified with Christ (Galatians 2:20).  This is pictured for us in baptism, which shows our old life as buried, our sins washed away and that we have new life with Christ.

If you are a Christian, although you live in this world, you are no longer of this world.  So this world no longer needs to be the focus of your thinking.

“Your life is hidden with Christ in God.”  While we are still physically on earth, spiritually believers are hidden with Christ.  We are clothed with Christ and His righteousness.  We are hidden from eternal judgement.

But, more than that, we are safe from everything the devil and the world can throw at us.  We are protected,  No ultimate harm can take us out of God’s presence and salvation.  We look weak to the world around, but we are surrounded and protected by the risen, mighty Saviour.

Suffering, disappointment, sickness, spiritual attack, even death, affect us physically, mentally and emotionally, but nothing, absolutely nothing can tear us away from Him.

So every single true believer is completely and eternally secure in Christ.  You can “set your minds on things that are above” because that is where you belong.  You can face anything, even death, because “your life is hidden with Christ in God.”

This is the truth and this is the source of your peace today.
