Living in this world, we face a daily battle with temptation and sin. God is perfect and holy; we are not. We fall short every day.
What do we do? Many people ignore their sins; we pretend that they are not there, we don’t think about them, but we live lives that are compromised and cold. We don’t shine with the joy of knowing Him.
Some of us, on the other hand, are so aware of our sins that we are filled with guilt most of the time. We get discouraged and even depressed and are down on ourselves. We make promises to God about trying harder and in our minds we link forgiveness to our efforts and not His grace.
Neither of these is the right way. The answer to the reality of sin is found in today’s verse. It tells us that Jesus “has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.” (Hebrews 9:26).
The answer to the sin problem is not to ignore it or to be filled with guilt, but to look with faith on the sacrifice of Christ. Through His death on the cross, He has dealt with your sin forever. He has “put away sin”. He has removed it from you by paying the penalty for every sin. We don’t need any sacrifice for our sins any more because there is one sacrifice – Jesus – who died “once for all.”
He died for ALL your sins. Every single one. This is the confidence we have that “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.” The sacrifice is done. You don’t need to ignore your sin, or be weighed down by your sin, you need to look to Jesus and confess your sin and rejoice that He has taken away ALL your sin, FOREVER.
Praise His name.
