This verse is good news for every single Christian. Over the last few days, we have seen that we are “new creations” (2 Corinthians 5:17), we are “created in Christ Jesus for good works” (Ephesians 2:10), and we are called to “put off your hold self” and “put on the new self” (Ephesians 4:23-24).
These are all amazing things, but life is a long journey. God has begun, but will He finish?
Yes! “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). That is His promise for all true believers.
He began the work when you were saved and you became a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). He planned the work when He chose you in Christ before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4) and he “prepared beforehand [the good works] that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).
So, He will continue to work. That is why we are told to “put off and put on” (Ephesians 4:23-24). He works in us and enables us by His Spirit to grow in maturity.
And He will complete the work. The final outcome, when we stand before Him, will be because of His grace and keeping power, not our goodness or success. His purpose in Christ will be fulfilled. You will stand before Him when Christ returns without spot or blemish (Ephesians 5:27).
As the hymn says, “Clothed in righteousness divine. Bold I approach the eternal throne, and claim the crown, through Christ my own.”
