Daily Devotional for 14 June 2020 – Hebrews 13v8

Hebrews 13:8

“Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and forever.”

This verse is well-known.  It is often on verse cards, bookmarks, posters and photos.  It tells us that our Saviour is always the same.  It tells us that He is God because He does not change.  It tells us that we can always trust Him because He is the same forever as He always has been.

He will always be Saviour.  No sin is too great to change Him.  Every sin of His people He will forgive.  He is always interceding for us (praying for us) before His Father so that we are always accepted before Him and we always will receive mercy and grace to help in time of need.

He will always be with us, as He promised in Matthew 28:20.  Even in the times when we feel alone, Jesus is right there with us.

Because He is the same, He is able to fulfil what He promised in John 14:2-3: “I go to prepare a place for you… I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also.”

He is also the same when everything around us changes.  Hebrews chapter 13 seems to be full of random instructions, with “Jesus Christ is the same…” in the middle.

This shows us that with all the changes and challenges of life, Jesus is the same.  If you are in prison (v3), He is the same.  If you are married or not, and you face the temptation to stay sexually pure (v4), He is the same.  When you need His provision (v5), He is the same. When you are alone and under attack (v5-6), He is the same.  When your church leaders come and go (v7), He is the same.  When people bring false teaching (v9), you don’t need to follow them, because Jesus is the same.  When people mock and insult you because of Him (v13), He is the same.

Whatever the world, the flesh and the devil throw at you today, stand on the Rock, Jesus.  You are safe with Him, Your unchanging Saviour and King.
