Daily Devotional 27 April 2020 – Isaiah 40v9

Dear brothers and sisters

Here is today’s scripture – “Behold your God!”

Isaiah 40:9

Isaiah 40 starts with different announcements: v1: “Comfort my people”, v3: “Prepare the way of the Lord”, v6-8: “All flesh is grass” but “the word of our God stands forever.”

Today’s verse (v9) is another announcement: “Behold your God!” God’s people needed that announcement because God had already warned them that trouble was coming. We need to receive this also because, when we face trouble we can lose sight of the Lord. The problems can seem so great and the Lord seems so far away.

So the prophet comes and says: “Behold your God! Look! Here is your God!” Look where? Look up and out. See what He has made, see how powerful He is and how glorious He is in what He has made. “By the Word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of His mouth all their host.” (Psalm 33:6). “Were you there when I laid the foundations of the earth?” (Job 38:4).

Our Creator God, is still God Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth and He is your helper (Psalm 121:1-2).

Look where? We look into the word of God. He reveals Himself. He tells us what He is like. His word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12). “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105).

Look where? Look at Jesus. Look at who He is : the eternal God, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Look at what He did: “Behold, my servant shall act wisely” (Isaiah 52:13), “He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5), but now “we see Him, who for a little while was made lower than the angels… crowned with glory and honour because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.” (Hebrews 2:9).

Isaiah 40:9 tells us this is “good news”. He is our God. Isaiah tells us “fear not.” He is our God.

He is your God today and always. Behold your God.
