Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)
This verse is a precious comfort to Christian believers. How often we feel our weakness as we approach God! Do we dare approach him, the Holy One? How can we be sure that he hears us?
Thomas Watson, author of Body of Divinity, says this:
Christ’s divine nature is the altar on which he offers up our prayers, and so they prevail. Prayer, as it comes from the saints is but weak and languid [that is, weak or faint]; but when the arrow of a saint’s prayer is put into the bow of Christ’s intercession, it pierces the throne of grace. (Thomas Watson, A Body of Divinity, Banner of Truth, 1986, p183)
Remember, when you approach the throne of grace, you come in the name of the One who is the great high priest, who is able to sympathise with our weaknesses, who has been tempted in every way and is without sin (Hebrews 4:15), and who is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to make intercession for them (Hebrews 7:25). On this basis, the Christian can come boldly to the throne of grace and be assured that, as it were, the arrow of our prayers in Christ reaches the throne.
May we therefore come boldly, persistently and often and present our worship and requests to God through Jesus.
