This verse shows us that faith is essential. “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.”
Faith is the foundation of everything. We need to believe that God exists and we need to believe who He is. This is what happened when we came to faith in Jesus. We believed that God exists and that we need to get right with Him. We believed that He is good and merciful and that He saves all who believe that Jesus died in our place and rose again.
So, we believed (and still believe) that He exists and that He is generous. And by believing, we came to please Him. We were lost and in our sin, and then through faith we were found and clothed in righteousness and so are pleasing to God. That’s great news! The Christian is pleasing to God.
Of course we need to continue to live by faith, to draw near to God by faith, and to obey by faith, which we will look at tomorrow.
For today, though, just think about how amazing it is that, if you are a Christian, you are pleasing to God. This is not because we have done any great and important things, but because you believe Him. It is as simple as that.
The enemy is very good at reminding us of our failures and sin so that we live with guilt in the back of our minds a lot of the time. We don’t need to live with that guilt. If you believe Him and you believe that He is good and you have trusted Jesus alone to save you, then you are pleasing to God.
No guilt, no condemnation, but acceptance and the delight of Almighty God. What a privilege to be a Christian!
