The last part of this verse says, “for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”
God, in His infinite wisdom, great love and sovereignty, has a purpose that our lives will be full of good works. How can we know what those good works are?
Firstly, He has revealed them in His word. It is His purpose for us to bear the fruit of the Spirit, to be patient, and loving, and joyful. It is His will for us to share the gospel, to care for the poor, to pray for the sick, to worship Him. He planned in eternity to have a people who would be conformed into the image of His Son (Romans 8:29).
Secondly, the Lord leads us through things that give opportunity for good works to be displayed. All our days are in His hands (Psalm 139:16) and He leads us through dark valleys and sunny hills, through dry deserts and refreshing waters, to develop good works.
So we learn to forgive when someone offends us. Patience is seen when we wait long for God to answer. Faith is seen and grows when it is tested. Joy in the Lord is seen when earthly joys our small. Peace is seen when we are going through trouble.
God’s word is true – “all things work together for good” (Romans 8:28). Part of the “good” are the “good works that He has prepared beforehand.” Bring your troubles to Him today. Yes, tell Him how you are feeling, give Him your burdens, but also ask Him to grow in you those good works to fulfil His purpose in your life for His glory and your joy.
