Why are people valuable? Why are you important? Where does a person’s worth come from?
It is the job we do? It is our race or gender? Is it how much money we have? Is it what we have achieved? Is it the family we were born into? Is it how many children we have? Is it where we live?
It is none of these things.
Does our value come from other people – what they say about us or do to us? Our boss says we did a good job, so we feel good… we lose our job and we feel like we have no value. Someone speaks to us in an encouraging way and that lifts us up… someone is harsh with us or ignores us and we feel like we are nothing.
Our value doesn’t come from other people either.
Our value comes from being made in the image of God: “So God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27)
Whatever your mind and emotions say today, whatever the world or culture says to you today, whatever your troubles seem to tell you today, don’t listen to them. Stand on the word of God – you are made in God’s image. You have been created to reflect Him to the whole of creation.
That is an awesome thing. That shows how precious you are.
After creating mankind, scripture tells us: “And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31).
Praise His name!
