In yesterday’s verse, Jeremiah said to the Lord, “Nothing is too hard for You” (Jeremiah 32:17).
In the next two verses we find out why. The Lord is the “great and mighty God” (v18). He is both great (literally: very, very big) and mighty (powerful, strong).
He is great and mighty in love (“steadfast love”, v18) and justice (“repay”, v18 ; “reward”, v19). This is seen most of all in the cross. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son. For all who believe, on the cross Jesus took the repayment of our sins and has rewarded us with His righteousness.
He is great and mighty in sovereignty (“Lord of hosts”, v18). He rules over all the angels in heaven and all the peoples of the earth.
He is great in wisdom (“counsel”, v19). His plans are perfect. He knows what He is doing. He is better at taking care of your life than you are.
He is “mighty in deed” (v19). There is no problem, no sickness, no miracle that is too hard for Him. He is the God who made the universe and holds it together.
He is great and mighty in knowledge (his “eyes are open to all the ways of the children of man”, v19). He sees everything. He is not surprised. He has not forgotten you or turned His back on you.
If you are a believer in Christ, this is your God. We don’t always understand the things that happen to us because we are not God. But He is, and you can rest today in His steadfast love because He is the “great and mighty God.”
