Daily Devotional for 22 June 2020 – Psalm 118v1-4

Psalm 118:1-4

As a parent, I have said many times, “I shouldn’t have to repeat myself!”  I think to myself, “I should only have to say things once.”

It is good that God is not like that!  We need to be told things many times before we “get” them.  He is so good and loving to us and His knows how we are made (Psalm 103:14), that He graciously reminds us again and again.

Here, in Psalm 118, we read four times in four verses, “His steadfast love endures forever.”

First, the psalmist says it as his own praise (v1).  Second, he calls all the people of God to declare, “His steadfast love endures forever” (v2).  Third, he calls the priests of Israel to declare, “His steadfast love endures forever” (v3).  Finally, he calls those who fear the Lord from the nations around to say, “His steadfast love endures forever” (v4).

Believers are in all of these groups.  We are worshippers (v1).  We are part of the people of God (v2), we are all priests now (v3, 1 Peter 2:9) with access into God’s presence, we have been bought from the nations around (Revelation 7:9) to fear the Lord (v4).

I think God wants us to be sure that His covenant love will never ever fail.  It is forever.  His love is forever when we feel His love and when we don’t.  His love is forever when we are filled with joy and when we are filled with sorrow.  His love is forever when things are going well and when things are difficult.

Don’t let the devil tempt you to think the Lord doesn’t love you.  The Lord repeats again and again and again – “His steadfast love endures forever” – so that we cannot forget.

Tell yourself today, “His steadfast love endures forever.”
