Daily Devotional for 10 May 2020 – John 14v27 and Matthew 11v29

There is so much in John 14:27. Let’s meditate on this verse some more, and also Matthew 11:29.

“Not as the world gives…”

The world’s peace is not permanent. It comes and goes according to circumstances. God’s peace depends on a person, Jesus, who is the Prince of Peace. So, it doesn’t depend on circumstances, because He is always the Prince of Peace.

Jesus gives us a peace that is not just outward (peaceful circumstances), but a peace that is inside, peace of mind and heart. He said, “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29)

A “yoke” (see the picture below) is what was used to join two animals so that they could pull a plough. This was heavy. It was also painful if the animals did not stay together.

When we are trying to pull the problems in our lives, it is heavy and painful and we have no peace.

But Jesus, the Prince of Peace, is saying, come and join Me, take My yoke upon you so that I walk with you, and we are going to carry these problems, these burdens, these fears, these troubles, this pain, together in My strength. He is “gentle”. He is not going to criticise you because you feel tired and weak . He is “lowly” (or humble). No problem is too small (or too great) for Him to help you with.

Then, however big the storm is around us, we will enjoy His peace.
